How Sildenafil Works
Sildenafil doesn't manufacture desire and it doesn't force an erection. It protects one — by keeping a chemical signal alive long enough for blood vessels to stay relaxed. Here is the whole mechanism in plain language.
An erection is a blood-flow event
Erections are hydraulic, not mechanical. When arousal happens, nerves release a molecule called nitric oxide inside the penis. Nitric oxide tells an enzyme to make a second messenger called cGMP, and cGMP relaxes the smooth muscle in the arteries of the penis. Relaxed arteries let blood rush into two spongy chambers, and the pressure produces a firm erection.
The body has a brake for this: an enzyme called PDE5 that breaks cGMP down. Once PDE5 wins, the erection subsides. Sildenafil works by blocking PDE5, so cGMP sticks around longer, the arteries stay relaxed longer, and arousal produces a fuller, more reliable erection.
